When we looked at re-doing our business website, we weren’t sure what platform to use. We’d done quite a few projects in WordPress and thought that it might be a good solution for allowing us to control content and also do a little bit of blogging.
We couldn’t find a theme that really stood out to us and they all have parts that you don’t really like the look of. With the UK lockdown in full swing when was a better time to build a theme from scratch.
One thing that was important to us was being able to control all of the content on the site with ease. We setup the Advanced Custom fields app and have been really pleased with how easy it is to edit almost anything on the website. There are very few things on our website that you need to go into the code in order to change, and I think that’s the best way to set things up.
The theme is built using Bones which is a starter WordPress theme that is basically the bones of the website without anything looking that great. You can see below to get an idea of how the Bones theme looks when you first install it.

Extremely basic but includes some code that you can reuse to create a list of blog posts, search bars, navigation menus and sidebars. So it’s really a playground to be creative and get stuck into the code.
If you’re thinking about having a new website built and you aren’t really sure whether to use WordPress or not, then I would recommend it. We’ve built a lot of sites for people who have asked for them to do be done without any backend system, sometimes it’s a good approach and it’s the right thing to do but you often find yourself wishing you had something like WordPress connected.
